Because each note is numbered it makes it easy to see the numerical distance between one note and another.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For example the interval between the 1-note and the 8note is +7. So if you wanted to play the same interval based on the 3-note you would just add 7 and get 10.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chords are &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;referred&lt;/span&gt; to by their root note and then the intervals that make up the chord. &lt;br /&gt;So a C-&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;Mjr&lt;/span&gt; is a 1(47)........the (47) are the Major 3rd (4) and the Perfect 5&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;th&lt;/span&gt; (7).  The numbers in brackets are the half step intervals from the root note. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A minor chord is a (37) having a minor 3rd and the Perfect 5&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;th&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Intervals are always &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;referred&lt;/span&gt; to in terms of half steps from the root note. This is a more literal and consistent way to relate to the interval.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is why it is so important to give a fixed "number name" to each half step in the octave.
